Lee Mental Health vs. SWFAS Blood Drive Challenge

In an effort to increase blood donations and make giving more fun, Lee Mental Health and Southwest Florida Addiction Services (SWFAS) participated in a "Blood Drive Challenge" to see which agency's employees could donate the most blood.

SWFAS won the first Blood Drive Challenge with a greater percentage of employees donating blood. With 29 employees (19% of total staff), SWFAS beat Lee Mental Health, who had 22 employees (7% of total staff) donate blood. Between the two organizations, 51 employees donated blood, equaling 150 lives saved.

At the end of the day, it's really about our employees giving back to the community that gives us so much every day.

Thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to SWFAS for winning the "Blood Drive Challenge" trophy for the next year!

United Way Site Visit

The Allocations Team from United Way visited Lee Mental Health on May 6, 2011. The team heard from Outpatient Therapy staff and several clients about how the money provided to Lee Mental Health each year benefits those we serve in Outpatient Therapy.

We made another successful presentation, thanks to our participating staff and board members. The team also heard directly from those we serve about how Lee Mental Health and United Way funding has provided them with hope, and helped them recover from their illnesses. The client presentations were powerful testaments to the impact our services have throughout the community.

United Way will be releasing its agency funding recommendations on June 15th.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

At Lee Mental Health, every day of the year is about mental health awareness. The month of May, however, is nationally recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. By joining together with other organizations and the community-at-large, we band together to increase mental health awareness while decreasing stigma.

Our goal, as always, is to spread the message that recovery works. This year, Lee Mental Health will celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month with employees and clients alike. During May, posters will be displayed in the lobbies of buildings A, C and I, as well as the Vista lobby, to commemorate the month. In addition, near these posters will be baskets of green bracelets that say "Recovery Works." We are encouraging clients to take one and wear it throughout the month to remind not only themselves but others that those suffering from mental illnesses can recover and lead successful and productive lives. Recovery, one of our agency's four Core Values, reads "We view the individual as a whole person with the capacity to recover, regardless of illness." May is our chance to remind ourselves of the importance of that value and live it with our clients.
